On 20 November 2013, Universal Children’s Day, Mostra and the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) organised a conference and photo exhibition in Brussels to mark the first anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the EU.
The EU dedicated the prize money to projects assisting children in conflict situations with education under the EU Children of Peace initiative. As a result, 28 000 children have benefitted from these projects in Ethiopia, DR Congo, Colombia, Ecuador, Iraq and Pakistan, carried out thanks to the efforts of highly respected humanitarian organisations. This event highlighted the work that has been carried out on the ground so far and welcomed further partners to the project.
Kristalina Georgieva, European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response participated in a panel discussion along with humanitarian organisations and media representatives. The three Presidents of the EU – President Barroso (Commission), President Schulz (Parliament) and President Van Rompuy (Council) – also addressed the conference via video messages.
